Only three drivers have won more races in the history of the sport and Verstappen could have passed Sebastian Vettel, next in his sights on 53, by the end of the season. The win was also his 14th in the last 15 races and a fifth in six editions of the grand prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Second is a priority for dominant Red Bull who have never yet finished a season with their drivers first and second. The race resumed from a standing re-start, with Verstappen accelerating into the distance and Leclerc second on the hard tyres but seven-times world champion Hamilton right behind on mediums. Verstappen had seized the safety car period as an opportunity for a cheap second pitstop and some fresh hards while Leclerc had pitted just before Magnussen's accident.

Dominant Red Bull and Verstappen, who started in sixth place and whose win was the first in Austin by a driver not on the front row, have already secured the constructors' and drivers' titles. "The whole race, I was struggling a lot with the brakes," said Verstappen, who was booed by some of the crowd as he stood on the podium. "I normally never really struggle with braking so far in my F1 career, but it was definitely a bit of a problem." "Forecast P2, maybe the win," the 38-year-old was informed over the radio as he chased down the McLaren. The top two deals this year, Toshiba Corp (6502.T) and JSR Corp (4185.T), had activists on their rosters. The strong M&A market comes as two long-standing obstacles to Japanese dealmaking - reluctance towards unsolicited takeovers and difficulties in cutting overlapping jobs in post merger integrations - may be fading. "Previously, excess employment issues held back M&A, because cutting overlapping headcount is the primary way M&A cuts costs and raises returns," Smith said. "As the labour shortage bites, expect M&A to surge as companies start being targeted as labour reservoirs."

Norris calls for harsher penalties for impeding

Norris, a good friend of Verstappen, said the Dutch driver should certainly have been penalised for impeding AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda. "It should just be harsher penalties for blocking people, because so many people do it. Verstappen told reporters separately that every case was different. He was cleared entirely of impeding Williams' Logan Sargeant after the American told stewards he did not believe the champion was at fault. And it's happened a lot this season, it's happened to me quite a few times, especially with certain teams," said Norris.

Japan’s Q2 GDP grows fastest in more than two yearsMarcel Thieliant, head of Asia-Pacific at Capital Economics, said the export-driven momentum in growth is unlikely to be sustained. Exports expanded 3.2% in the second quarter led by car exports and inbound tourism, while capital expenditure was flat. Global financial markets have been closely watching Japan's wage data, as Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda regards pay growth as a key gauge to consider in deliberations about a shift in policy. Regular wages rose 1.8% in May from a year before, labour ministry data showed, the biggest gain since February 1995. The strong base pay growth boosted worker's total cash earnings, or nominal wages, by 2.5% in May, after a revised 0.8% increase logged in April. Still, real wages contracted 1.2% in May, the 14th consecutive month of year-on-year declines, as relentless consumer inflation outstrips nominal pay growth and squeezes households' buying power. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, household spending was down 1.1%, versus an estimated 0.5% gain to mark a fourth month of decline.

Ricciardo says racing for Red Bull again would be 'fairytale'
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
June 20 (Reuters) - Australian Daniel Ricciardo has raised the possibility of racing again for Red Bull as a 'fairytale' ending to his Formula One career. The 33-year-old is spending a year on the sidelines as Red Bull reserve after being replaced at McLaren by compatriot Oscar Piastri. Ricciardo raced for Red Bull from 2014 to 2018, winning seven races, after two seasons with sister team Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) from 2012-13. "Honestly, the fairytale ending (would be) to finish my career here (at Red Bull) if I could have it all my own way," he said. Ricciardo has been working in the simulator and will drive the Red Bull car at a Silverstone tyre test after next month's British Grand Prix.
